Abstract

The accessibility of artificial intelligence has extended up to creating new things which are potential of beating human creativity.  Since it has the capability to ‘see’, ‘hear’, ‘speak’, ‘move’, and ‘write’, it has a scope in widening its applications in the sectors which include audio, image and video analysis, gaming, journalism, script writing, filmmaking, social media analysis and marketing. AI has its impact on each sector including the generative skills like creative writing, music, painting, content creation and many more which are meant to be created. This article has a brief overview of the contribution of Gen AI in art and music and their impact on the traditional, ethical and protective measures. There has been a huge advancement in arts and music sectors which is enabling users to take help from AI and create new and collaborative forms of art.

Key words: Generative AI, large learning models, collaborative art forms, exploitation, patent, Limitations.

Introduction

The role of generative ai in creative industries has a revolutionary impact yet to answer many questions. There has been a leveraging change in the artistic industries by introduction of gen AI in art and music. The combination of creativity and artificial intelligence has always been a very debated and controversial topic, since it includes the special ability of humans to think. These days the separation line between human ability to think and creation of artificial intelligence models has gotten thin.[1] This subject has become alarming not only because of the technical advancements but the future of creative industries, the deterioration of human intuition and cultural, ethical concerns.

Overview of Generative AI and its relevance in creative industries

Basically, Gen AI’s role in the creative industry has a good scope to innovate and contribute to the betterment of the industry in spite of ethical concerns. Many progressive AI tools are being used and been productive in the creative industry. The use of AI tools has increased rapidly in recent years.  Based on analysis of data from arXivFootnote3 and Gateway to Research,Footnote4 Davies et al. (2020) revealed that the growth rate of research publications on AI (relevant to the creative industries) exceeds 500% in many countries (in Taiwan the growth rate is 1490%), and the most of these publications relate to image-based data. The art driven from generative AI significantly deviated from the traditional or conventional approach and methods that the artists used by using complex algorithms and large datasets which results in independent and unique artworks or sometimes might result in artworks that has a basic artistic collaboration. The use of generative AI in these fields might increase drastically in coming decade as shown in fig 1.Right now there are a vast number of Gen AI models like Leonardo AI, Mid Journey V6,DALL .E 3, Lexica art and more.[2]

Fig 1: The above picture depicts a drastic increase of creative tools in the coming decade.

A Case Study: The collaborative audio and video Gen AI

IBM has made an experiment on how a generative model would create its own trailer of a horror film by taking some dataset inputs. The model must process both visual and audio inputs and generate an eerie horror trailer of a movie. [3]IBM has provided a detailed explanation on how it had trained the model and created a trailer on its own. The model was given a huge audio and video dataset of trailers of horror films to train after which the movie was given as the input to the model for generating the trailer. Some steps like identifying scenes for the trailer and processing them, comparing many trailers are being undergone by the model. It is productive to identify the generative AI in one of the most viewed creative industries and we all know that Artificial Intelligence already has got its impact in various industries holistically, contributing in the medical, law, farming, automobiles etc. But having the Filmmaking is a great revolutionary step of how helpful the upcoming technologies can be in discovering new ways and setting paths in creative industries too.[4]

Limitations of Generative AI in art and music and ethical considerations

It has always been a concern to the entire world if technology could be capable of capturing the world, which only begins when the technology gets a chance to think like a human. The major flex for humans is creativity and thinking capability which is not an easy deal for technology and AI is a major concern in that view. When a machine exhibits full human intelligence, it is often referred to as ‘general AI’ or ‘strong AI’ (Bostrom 2014) Apart from the long term considerations, art is something that needs to be appreciated and recognised, which is why the concept of patent has come to picture.[5] After the integration of gen ai in creative fields, patent becomes a questionable aspect to artists, audience, critics and admirers. Sometimes the technology might be misused, and it is when ethical concerns come into question. It’s a surprising to know in an art competition, the artwork created by Midjourney won over the ones created by artists, due to which the artist refused to accept a prize and considering the ethical aspects artists protested by filing petitions against the most prominent art generative technology companies which convert text to art and image generators ,arguing that the models are being trained by the datasets of the artists and intellectual copyrights.

Conclusion

By integrating the generative AI in the field of art and music, we can conclude that it will redefine the operations and goals of artists but would also have its limitations and challenges to face. The boundaries of creative fields will be redefined and would become wider. There is a huge scope for the work to be improved by the utilization of creative AI tools which work on integrating human creativity with machine intelligence. Another more flex is that this technology of artificial intelligence makes art free to be created by anyone without limitations. Anyways this freedom of creation also questions social, ethical and intellectual concerns after such a revolutionary move in the creative industry.
