Stanford University’s Top 2 Percent Scientists (Career Impact) (1960-2020) List: Analysis from Citations and Multi-disciplinary Research Aspects

Using Scopus publication impact scores, experts from Stanford University have released a complete list of top 2% world’s most influential scientists [1]. Prof. John PA Loannidis and his colleagues at Stanford University [2] compiled the study, which was then published by Elsevier. In the list, there are many fields and sub-fields that represent the growth of research around the world. In this article, we analyze the performance of researchers according to the number of citations and choice of their research subjects. Figure 1 represents the total number of citations according to the geographical location of the researchers.

After getting the information about the world’s citation charts, we analyze the Citation of top 2% world’s most influential scientists from Indian higher educational institutes. Figure 2 represents the total citations of top 2% world’s most influential scientists from IITs, Figure 3 represents the total Citation of top 2% world’s most influential scientists from NITs, and figure 4 represents the citation of top 2% world’s most influential scientists from IIITs.

Apart from the number of citations, the research subject is also an essential factor representing the institute’s importance and multi-disciplinary research aspects. Figure 5, figure 6, and figure 7 represent the number of unique research topics selected by top 2% world’s most influential scientists from IITs, NITs, and IIITs, respectively. From figure 5, it can be concluded that the researchers at IIT Delhi are researching in many different fields as compared to other IITs. We can see similar trends at NIT Rourkela and IIIT Allahabad also from the NITs and IITs, respectively.

In summary, it can be concluded that Indian researchers are contributing significantly to the global research platform in several term of both citations and multi-disciplinary research aspects .
